From the garage to a successful business

Schimmer Druck in Delitzsch / Germany is focusing on digital printing and has expanded its folding capacity by purchasing a fully automatic MB Bäuerle prestigeFOLD NET 52.

The district town Delitzsch in the north of Leipzig is mainly known for its baroque palace and a chocolate factory. However, it is also the seat of the company Schimmer Druck. The first stone of the printing shop was laid in a garage by Thomas Schimmer in 1990 with the foundation of the Delitzsch office market, where stationery and office equipment were sold. Due to the changing customer requirements, the demand for printed products was growing steadily and the decision was taken to enter this particular market. The first printing machine was purchased in 1994. Many investments in machinery followed in the subsequent years. This was accompanied by a growing need for space, which resulted in new constructions and annexes. Thomas Schimmer’s wife Birgit and his daughter Katja are also an active part of the family business together with a staff of 15 employees. The printing shop now covers an area of more than 2,000 m² and the diverse product range comprises brochures, CD-booklets, labels, files, mailings, posters, calendars, shipping envelopes, newspaper supplements and much more. The customer base is primarily composed of advertising agencies, but also craft firms and retail companies. These customers are domiciled both in the immediate surroundings and in places as far away as Switzerland.

The full-service print shop covers offset as well as digital printing. In the offset area a total of 15 printing units are available for formats of up to 510 x 740 mm. For digital printing, a continuous form and a cut sheet system are used. As early as in 2009, the advantages of digital printing were recognized and since then even individual items and small print runs can be produced at low costs. It was above all the changed order mix which necessitated investments in print finishing. To be able to fold small print runs economically, an additional folding system was needed.

For almost 15 years Schimmer Druck has been a customer of the Black Forest specialist for print finishing, the company MB Bäuerle. “When we bought the semi-automatic folding machine multimaster CAS back in 2003, we were already convinced of the machine concept. Now we wanted to increase our flexibility and were searching for a system with six fold plates for even more complicated fold products. The fully automatic prestigeFOLD NET 52 is therefore the ideal machine for us “, explains Managing Director Thomas Schimmer the reasons behind the investment. The main characteristics of the machine are its high degree of automation combined with simple operation. All relevant modules from the feeder to the delivery are set automatically. A job memory makes it possible to call up repetitive jobs, resulting in a considerable reduction of set-up times. “The print runs are becoming smaller and smaller. Quantities of 200, 500 or 1000 are no exception. With the new folding system, they can be set up in next to no time. Moreover, many jobs no longer need to be outsourced to a bookbinder, which makes us faster and more flexible. The possibility to save repetitive jobs and to call them up when required also helps us a lot. The simple operation via touch screen makes it easy for unskilled personnel to become acquainted with the job. And in addition we have noticed a considerable improvement of the folding quality thanks to the new prestigeFOLD NET 52. This means that we are now able to offer our customers a top performance“, summarises Thomas Schimmer his experiences of the past few years with the new machine system.

That the company has always backed the right horse is demonstrated by the fact that Schimmer Druck’s Online-Shop print3.de, which was founded in 2009, has become the portal for special requests. It will interesting to watch the further developments of the company.
